Key considerations for using precision welded pipes?
08 Nov,2022
Precision welded pipe It is a steel pipe manufactured by rolling and forming steel plates or strips, followed by welding. Typically, it is supplied in fixed lengths of 6 meters. Precision welded pipes feature a simple production process, high manufacturing efficiency, a wide range of grades and specifications, and relatively low equipment investment; however, their strength is generally lower than that of seamless steel pipes. Below, we will provide a detailed overview.

Precision welded pipe The raw material used is steel plate or steel strip, and depending on the welding process, it is classified into furnace‑welded pipe, electric‑welded pipe, and automatic arc‑welded pipe. Based on the weld configuration, it is further divided into straight‑seam and spiral types. According to the end‑shape, it is available in round and special‑shaped forms. In fact, precision welded pipes have smaller outer diameters and are typically produced in small batches with high precision. Cold‑drawn finished products exhibit superior dimensional accuracy and excellent surface quality. They are lighter in weight and represent an economical structural steel, with increasingly broad applications. Of course, precision welded pipes also contain alloying elements such as chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and titanium (Ti). Chromium significantly enhances the strength, hardness, wear resistance, oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance of stainless steel, particularly in industrial settings; nickel improves the strength of stainless steel pipes while preserving their toughness and providing enhanced resistance to acids and alkalis—conditions that can adversely affect the human respiratory system, skin, and eyes, making nickel’s role especially critical; and titanium is added to ensure the density of precision welded pipes and prevent intergranular corrosion.
Precision welded pipe products are widely used in hydraulic engineering, petrochemicals, and other fields, and are one of the 20 key products developed in China. Their production is characterized by hot‑working processes: the steels and alloys employed readily undergo plastic deformation, followed by recrystallization and quenching to achieve the final shape. Another prominent feature today is that manufacturing, transportation, and post‑processing must all meet customer specifications. Welded‑pipe manufacturers need to understand detailed requirements regarding pipe geometry, diameter, packaging, and especially shipping logistics and pipeline dimensions. Precision welded pipes also demand stringent fabrication standards. For instance, preliminary rolling and annealing may be performed; workpieces can be heated to a set temperature, and after cooling, they are held at that temperature for a period before undergoing heat treatment—this step helps prevent distortion and cracking, facilitating subsequent machining. The precision welded pipes are then slit to the required width for further processing and tube forming. During slitting, care must be taken to avoid scratches on the coil caused by the slitting blade. Manufacturers predominantly employ argon arc welding and plasma welding: argon arc welding uses pure argon as the shielding gas and is typically used for welding stainless steel pipes less than 3 mm thick, while plasma welding offers superior penetration and is suited for welding stainless steel pipes ranging from 5 to 8 mm in thickness.
