What is the purpose of solution treatment for stainless steel seamless tubes?
11 Aug,2025
The solution‑treatment temperature is primarily determined by the alloy’s chemical composition. Generally, for steels with a greater variety and higher content of alloying elements, the solution‑treatment temperature should be raised accordingly. In particular, steels containing high levels of manganese, molybdenum, nickel, and silicon require an elevated solution‑treatment temperature to ensure complete dissolution of these elements, thereby achieving the desired softening effect. However, for stabilization‑type steels, such as 321 stainless‑steel tubing, a high solution‑treatment temperature can lead to the full dissolution of carbides of stabilizing elements—carbonitrides of titanium and niobium—into the austenite matrix; during subsequent cooling, these carbides precipitate at grain boundaries in the form of Cr23C6, potentially causing intergranular corrosion. To prevent the precipitation and dissolution of stabilizing‑element carbides (TiC and NbC), a lower limit for the solution‑treatment temperature is typically employed.
For stainless steel seamless tubes, the three key factors in solution treatment are temperature, holding time, and cooling rate. What effects does solution treatment have on stainless steel seamless tubes?
1: To ensure uniform microstructure and composition in stainless steel seamless tubes, this is particularly critical for the material, as the rolling temperature and cooling rate vary along different sections of hot-rolled tubing, leading to non-uniform microstructural characteristics. At elevated temperatures, atomic mobility increases, causing the σ phase to dissolve and the chemical composition to become more homogeneous; rapid cooling then yields a uniform single-phase microstructure.
2: Eliminate work hardening to facilitate continuous cold working. Through solution treatment, the distorted crystal lattice is restored, elongated and fragmented grains recrystallize, internal stresses are relieved, the tensile strength of the wire decreases, and its elongation increases.
3: The inherent corrosion resistance of stainless steel tubing. Cold working induces the precipitation of carbides and introduces lattice defects, thereby reducing the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel tube. After solution treatment, the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel seamless tube is restored to its optimal condition.
