Let’s talk about whether stainless steel welded pipes can rust.
07 Jan,2023
Let me talk about it. Stainless steel welded pipe Will it rust?
Stainless steel welded pipes also contain chromium, nickel, aluminum, silicon, and other elements. Typically, the chromium content in stainless steel welded pipes is no less than 12%, and may even reach 18%. Now let’s examine whether stainless steel welded pipes are prone to rusting.
Below are some of the reasons. When chromium and other elements are added to steel, they can alter its properties. For example, the steel’s microstructure becomes more uniform, making it easier for a dense protective oxide layer to form on its surface, thereby significantly enhancing its corrosion resistance. As a result, stainless steel can withstand the corrosive effects of fire, water, acids, alkalis, and various aqueous solutions, remaining resistant to rust.

Scientists have found that the more uniform the internal structure of steel, the closer the interactions among its various constituents, making it more difficult for corrosive gases to penetrate. Moreover, a protective layer of metal oxides adheres to the surface, effectively giving the steel an armor-like shield and significantly enhancing its resistance to rust.
Why Stainless steel welded pipe Could it still rust? When dark brown rust appears on the surface of a stainless steel pipe, people are often quite surprised. They tend to think, “Stainless steel isn’t supposed to rust. If it does, then it’s no longer stainless steel—perhaps there’s something wrong with the construction steel.”
In fact, this is a superficial misunderstanding: people often assume that stainless steel will rust under certain conditions. In reality, stainless steel possesses resistance to atmospheric oxidation—hence its name—and it also exhibits corrosion resistance in acidic, alkaline, and saline environments.
However, its corrosion resistance varies depending on the steel’s chemical composition, microstructure, intended application, and the nature of the surrounding environment. For example, 304 seamless steel pipe exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in dry, clean air, but when exposed to the salty sea spray typical of coastal cities, it quickly corrodes. In contrast, 316 seamless steel pipe performs much better. Therefore, no single type of stainless steel can guarantee corrosion resistance under all conditions. Stainless steel relies on a very thin, strong, dense, and relatively stable chromium‑rich oxide film that forms on its surface, which effectively prevents further oxygen penetration and oxidation, thereby providing corrosion resistance.
There are many methods for damaging this type of protective film; the following are commonly used in everyday life:
1. Dust or heterogeneous particulates containing other chemical elements adhere to the surface of stainless steel welded pipes in humid, cold air. Condensate between these adherents and the stainless steel forms a miniature galvanic cell, leading to electrochemical corrosion that damages the protective oxide film—this phenomenon is known as an electrochemical reaction.
2. Organic compounds in fruit juices—such as those from melons and vegetables, vegetable‑fruit blends, fried noodles, and phlegm—can adhere to stainless steel surfaces. In the presence of water and oxygen, these organic substances can form corrosive products that, over time, erode the metal surface.
3. Stainless steel welded pipe Surface adhesion of acidic, alkaline, or saline substances (such as edible alkali used for wall decoration or splashes of lime mortar) can lead to localized corrosion.
4. In air contaminated by pollutants—such as atmospheres containing high concentrations of sulfates, carbon oxides, and nitrogen oxides—when these substances come into contact with condensed water, they form liquid droplets of hydrochloric acid and acetic acid, leading to increased corrosion rates.
