Stainless steel possesses properties such as corrosion resistance, acid resistance, high-temperature resistance, wear resistance, and typically exhibits a non-magnetic austenitic structure. Stainless steel is a high-grade alloy commonly used in everyday life, such as stainless steel cutlery, kitchenware, and building materials.
Most of the stainless steel we see every day is nickel-chromium stainless steel, which belongs to essentially the same family of steels, such as… 302 and 304 , as well as chromium metal 1-4 Cr13 (Commonly referred to as “stainless steel”). In China, there are more than a hundred grades of stainless steel, each with distinct alloying elements and varying elemental contents, resulting in significant differences in performance and value. Therefore, careful analysis of stainless steel identification is essential to clarify the markings on the steel grade, and comprehensive testing should be employed to accurately identify the material.
At present, we primarily employ the following methods to identify 304 Stainless steel pipe:
304 Stainless steel pipes are typically sourced through orders placed with steel mills or imported from overseas, as well as from surplus processed products held in inventory. 304 The identification methods vary depending on the source of the stainless steel pipe.
To identify stainless steel materials ordered from importers or steel mills, it is usually sufficient to verify the markings on the steel or its packaging against the quality certificates issued by the importer or mill.
A certificate of quality is the supplier’s confirmation and assurance of the inspection results for a batch of products. Accordingly, the certificate of quality must not only specify the material’s name, specifications, quantity, weight, and delivery condition, but also detail all inspection results for the designated assurance items.
Similarly, for ease of management, to avoid confusion, and to prevent usage-related accidents arising from such confusion, manufacturers mark materials or packaging with the brand name, batch number, condition, specifications, quantity, and manufacturer’s code. The markings shall be consistent with the contents of the certificate of quality.
Common marking methods mainly include the following three types: painting (applying a color that indicates the brand to designated areas of the material), and printing (printing or spraying onto specified areas of the material to indicate its brand, specifications, Furnace numbers, etc., are typically marked on thick steel plates or large and medium-sized steel sections; material lists (for materials bundled or boxed) are posted on tags indicating the grade, batch number, specifications, quantity, and other details.
