Stainless Steel Cylinder Tube Machining Process
28 Feb,2022
Stainless steel cylinder tube It is a high-precision steel pipe material produced by cold drawing or hot rolling. Precision Stainless steel cylinder tube It is primarily used to manufacture pneumatic or hydraulic components, such as pneumatic cylinders or hydraulic cylinders. It can be produced as seamless tubing because its inner and outer surfaces are free of oxide layers, ensuring no leakage under high pressure, with high dimensional accuracy and excellent surface finish. It also resists deformation during cold bending and does not crack when flared or flattened. The chemical composition of the cylinder material includes carbon (C), silicon (Si), manganese (Mn), sulfur (S), phosphorus (P), and chromium (Cr).

Stainless steel cylinder tube It is achieved through rolling, as the surface layer develops residual compressive stresses that help seal microcracks and inhibit the propagation of erosive wear. This enhances surface corrosion resistance, delays the initiation or growth of fatigue cracks, and improves the fatigue strength of stainless steel cylinder liners. During roll forming, a cold‑work hardening layer forms on the rolled surface, reducing elastoplastic deformation at the contact interface between mating components, thereby improving the wear resistance of the inner wall of the stainless steel cylinder liner and preventing scorching caused by grinding. Moreover, the reduction in surface roughness following rolling can enhance mating performance.
Rolling of stainless steel cylinder tubes is a chip-free machining process that exploits the plastic deformation of metals at room temperature to smooth out microscopic surface roughness, thereby modifying the surface microstructure, mechanical properties, geometry, and dimensions. Consequently, this method can simultaneously achieve both surface finishing and strengthening—objectives that grinding alone cannot attain.
Regardless of the machining method employed, stainless steel cylinder tubes invariably exhibit microscopic tool marks—unevenness and irregularities—on their surfaces, resulting in alternating peaks and valleys.
Stainless steel cylinder tube Rolling‑pressing principle: This is a pressure‑based finishing process that exploits the cold plasticity of metals at room temperature. A rolling tool applies a controlled compressive force to the workpiece surface, inducing plastic flow of the surface metal and filling in existing microscopic valleys, thereby reducing surface roughness. Moreover, the plastic deformation of the surface metal leads to work hardening of the microstructure, refinement of grain size, and the development of a dense fibrous structure along with a residual stress layer, which enhances hardness and strength. Consequently, the wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and surface compatibility of the workpiece are improved. Rolling‑pressing is a non‑cutting plastic‑deformation process.
