Three Types of Hardness in Stainless Steel Pipes

Three Types of Hardness in Stainless Steel Pipes

Stainless steel pipes are hollow, long, round steel products widely used across various industries. Understanding their hardness is essential, and this article briefly introduces three common hardness scales: 1. Rockwell Hardness Like the Brinell hardness test, the Rockwell hardness test is also a indentation method. The key difference is that it measures the depth of the indentation. The Rockwell scale is one of the most widely used methods today; among steel pipe standards, its HRC rating ranks second only to the Brinell HB scale. Rockwell hardness is suitable for testing metals ranging from very soft to extremely hard, addressing some limitations of the Brinell method. It is simpler than Brinell and allows direct readings from the hardness tester’s dial.

A Brief Overview of the Main Applications of Several Common Stainless Steel Grades

Stainless steel is subject to numerous variables that characterize the corrosive environment—such as chemical agents and their concentrations, atmospheric conditions, temperature, and exposure time. Consequently, selecting and specifying materials without a thorough understanding of the medium’s exact properties can be quite challenging. Below is a brief overview of several common stainless‑steel grades: Type 304 is a widely used material. In construction, it offers general resistance to corrosion and can withstand exposure to food‑processing media (though it may corrode under high‑temperature conditions containing concentrated acids or chlorides). It also resists organic compounds, dyes, and a broad range of inorganic substances. Type 304L (low‑carbon) exhibits excellent resistance to nitric acid and performs well under moderate conditions.

Why does stainless steel rust?

Why does stainless steel rust?

When brown rust spots appear on the surface of stainless steel, people often express surprise, thinking, “Stainless steel shouldn’t rust,” “If it rusts, it’s no longer stainless steel,” or “Perhaps there’s something wrong with the steel itself.” In fact, these are mistaken assumptions stemming from a lack of understanding about stainless steel. Under certain conditions, stainless steel can indeed rust. Stainless steel possesses the ability to resist atmospheric oxidation—its so‑called “stainlessness”—and it also exhibits corrosion resistance in environments containing acids, alkalis, and salts—its “corrosion resistance.” However, the extent of its corrosion resistance varies depending on the steel’s chemical composition, microstructure, service conditions, and the nature of the surrounding environment. For example, 304 steel…
