What are the characteristics of stainless steel cylinder tubes?
11 Jan,2022
Stainless steel cylinder tube Rolling treatment, by inducing residual compressive stresses in the surface layer, helps to seal micro‑cracks and inhibit the propagation of corrosion. This enhances surface corrosion resistance, delays the initiation or growth of fatigue cracks, and improves the fatigue strength of the cylinder. During roll forming, a cold‑work hardening layer develops on the rolled surface, reducing elastoplastic deformation at the contact interface of the grinding pair, thereby improving the wear resistance of the cylinder’s inner wall and preventing grinding‑induced damage. Furthermore, the reduction in surface roughness following rolling can enhance mating performance.

Rolling is a chip-free manufacturing process that exploits the plastic deformation of metals at room temperature to flatten microscopic surface irregularities, thereby modifying the surface microstructure, mechanical properties, geometry, and dimensions. Consequently, this method can simultaneously achieve both finishing and strengthening—objectives that grinding cannot attain.
Regardless of the machining method employed, the part’s surface will invariably exhibit fine, uneven tool marks, resulting in an alternating pattern of peaks and valleys.
Principle of rolling: This process exploits the cold plasticity of metals at room temperature. By applying a controlled compressive force to the workpiece surface using rolling tools, the metal undergoes plastic flow, filling in previously existing shallow depressions. This pressure‑based finishing operation reduces the surface roughness of the workpiece. As a result of the plastic deformation induced by rolling, the surface microstructure hardens, grain size refines, and a dense fibrous structure develops, while a residual stress layer forms. These changes enhance hardness and strength, thereby improving the workpiece’s wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and surface compatibility. Rolling is a non‑cutting plastic‑deformation process.
Stainless steel cylinder tube Difference from seamless steel pipe:
1. The primary characteristic of seamless steel pipes is the absence of welded joints, enabling them to withstand substantial pressure. These products may be supplied in a very rough as-cast condition or as cold-drawn components.
2. Stainless steel cylinder liners are a relatively recent product, characterized by tight dimensional tolerances and surface roughness requirements for both the inner bore and the outer wall.
Characteristics of stainless steel cylinder tubes:
1. Small outer diameter.
2. High precision, suitable for small-batch production.
3. Cold-drawn products offer high dimensional accuracy and excellent surface quality.
4. The cross-sectional area of steel pipes is relatively complex.
5. Steel pipes exhibit excellent performance and a dense metallic structure.
Differences after hot-rolled stainless steel cylinder tubing:
Hot rolling Stainless steel cylinder tube Using continuous-cast round billets or initial‑rolling blooms as raw material, the stock is heated in a walking‑beam reheating furnace and then descaled with high‑pressure water before entering the roughing mill. After head and tail trimming, the rough‑rolled strip proceeds to the finishing mill, where computer‑controlled rolling is performed. Following rolling, the material is cooled by laminar flow and coiled into straight‑drawn coils. The ends of these straight‑drawn coils typically exhibit tongue‑shaped or fish‑tail profiles, with relatively poor thickness and width tolerances, and are prone to defects such as waviness, edge folding, and tower‑like distortions. Coil weight and inner diameter are standardized at 760 mm. After undergoing a finishing line that includes head and tail trimming, edge trimming, multiple straightening passes, and leveling, the straight‑drawn coils are further processed—via slitting or rewinding—to produce hot‑rolled steel sheets, hot‑rolled flat steel coils, slit strips, and other products. If the oxide scale is removed by pickling and the coils are coated with oil, the hot‑rolled finished coils become hot‑rolled pickled coils.
